::JUNIORS

06-07/02/10 - Scottish Junior Nationals, Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh

The Junior National Championships concluded this weekend with some squash of excellent quality on display from all participants. Congratulations to all of our new National Champions!

There was a minor upset in the Boys U11 where unseeded Adam Reid (NEW), following 2 narrow 3-2 victories in the initial rounds, came through to defeat No 1 Calum Atterbury (ESC) in 3 games, 11/9, 11/7, 13/11. Alexander Ralston (LIN) finished in 3rd place.

Kirsty

An all Crieff final in the Girls U11 saw Hannah Graham (CRF) squeeze past Maddie Orr (CRF) in 3 games 11/8, 11/8, 11/5 to take the title. In the Girls U13, Hannah Daly (LON), a new face to the Scottish Squash Tournament Circuit managed to do enough against Carrie Hallam (ESC) to win 11/4, 11/5, 11/3.

An exciting final in the Boys U13 saw a high paced game with both players volleying at every opportunity. In the end Harry Anderson (WC) proved too strong for Jack Hogg (PER), although Jack made Harry earn his victory; Harry winning 11/6, 8/11, 11/9, 11/9.

Fergus

The Girls U15 saw No 1 seed Kirsty Lobban (INV), and No 2 seed Elspeth Young (KIN) make it through the playoffs after the initial round robin stage; although both were taken to four games by their semi-final opponents. Kirsty won the final 11/8, 11/7, 11/7, and Claire Gadsby finished in 3rd place.

Following the late withdrawals of both the No 1 and No 2 seeds, and a re-draw on the Saturday morning the title was in the sights of several players. Jason Lang (DLR) managed to just edge past Ben Mazzucco in 5 games to earn his place in the final, whilst Fergus Richards (WICK) defeated club compatriot Gary Beales (WICK) to take his place in the final. In a match of very high quality Fergus managed to take the opportunities when they came to win the title 11/4, 8/11, 11/5, 11/9. Ben finished in 3rd place.

Greg

In the Girls U17 Morgan McGuire's (DLR) fast pace proved too quick for Rosie Allan (ASRC) as Morgan managed to win the final in 3 games 11/7, 11/8, 11/6. In the Girls U19 Mhairi Charlton (ASRC) eased past Gillian Crawford in straight games 11/7, 11/3, 11/3.

The Boys U17 final probably saw the match of the championships where the first game between Douglas Kempsell (WAV), and David Jones (PER) lasted 23 minutes, with both players playing extremely quick, controlled squash, with some amazing retrieving. David took the first game 18/16, before Douglas came back to take the next 3 games 11/4, 11/5, 12/10.

There was another minor upset in the Boys U19 where the in-form No 2 seed Greg Lobban (INV) managed to come from behind to defeat No 1 seed Sam Allan (ASRC) in 4 games, 9/11, 11/2, 11/5, 11/1.
