17-19/07/09 - Heriot-Watt University Junior Open

The 2009 Heriot-Watt University Junior Open concluded today, with some great matches played in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

The boys U/19 final was won by Pakistan's Aamir Khan, who defeated Chris Ferguson 11/9 in the fifth game, after a titanic match. Aamir well deserves his win, having defeated Kevin Moran, also in five games, in a semi-final.

The girls U/19 event saw Mhairi Charlton defeat Ireland's Rachel Black in three games. This was Mhairi's first win in an ESF U/19 event, achieved while still eligible for the U/17's.

In the girls U/17event, Rosie Alan and Morgan McGuire played a marathon five games, Morgan finally emerging the winner. A high standard of squash was exhibited throughout the match and bodes well for the coming season. American, Skyler Murphy, took third in the draw.

The U/17 boy's final went to Greg Lobban over Douglas Kempsell, in four games. Greg dominated the match early, and was able to hold off the challenge of Doug as he came back into the match in a determined fashion. Dutchman, Richard Schraeder, took third.

The U/15 boys final featured Alex Finch from England and Welshman, Owain Taylor. Owain won a well contested match, surprising many in the process. Rory Stewart defeated Fergus Richards in their third place play-off.

Top seed in the girls U/15, Kirsty Lobban, won the event in relatively untroubled fashion. France's Oceane Monetat was second and Claire Gadsby third.

Finally the U/13 boys event was won by an enthusiastic Jack Hogg over Richard Hollins. Both boys acquited themselves well throughout the event and Jack was a worthy winner.

Congratulations to all participants, who again supported the tournament, and a particular thank you to Heriot-Watt University and their staff, for their support of the event, without which we would be unable to provide Scottish juniors this opportunity to compete on home soil. Photographs of the event may be viewed below and eligible results will be entered on the Matrix in due course.
